To accept contactless payments with Square Tap to Pay, download the free Square Point of Sale app, open Settings › Account, and switch on Tap to Pay for iPhone or Android. Setup takes under a minute, and there is no hardware to buy. From then on, you ring up the sale, hit Charge, choose Tap to Pay, and the customer holds their card or phone against yours — the top front on an iPhone, the upper back on Android. You pay Square’s standard in-person rate and nothing else.

The way businesses take payments has changed. Most no longer rely on a cash register at a counter; plenty do not have one at all.
If you run a pop-up market, a stall at a local fair or a mobile service, your phone is your register. That is enormously convenient for you and for your customers — provided you know how to do it properly, and provided you are confident enough in the process that your customers are too.
With Square’s Tap to Pay feature, you can accept contactless credit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay and other digital wallets directly on your smartphone. You need nothing else, and neither do they.
If you are not sure this is the right route for your business, Square Tap to Pay vs. the Square Card Reader covers the trade-offs first. If you already know it is, here is the guide.
What is Tap to Pay?
Tap to Pay uses the Near Field Communication (NFC) chip already built into your smartphone. When a customer brings a contactless card or phone close to yours, the two devices exchange encrypted payment tokens to process the transaction. The card number itself is never stored on your device and is never visible to you.
How to Accept Contactless Payments
Follow these steps to start taking contactless payments.
Check Your Compatibility
Before anything else, make sure your device meets the baseline requirements.
- iPhone: iPhone XS or later, running a recent version of iOS.
- Android: an NFC-enabled device running a recent version of Android.
Your device also needs an active internet connection over Wi-Fi or cellular data, because Square Tap to Pay does not support offline payments. If you regularly work where the signal is poor, this is the single reason to carry a physical reader instead — the reader stores offline payments for up to 24 hours; Tap to Pay cannot.
Enable Tap to Pay in the Square App
This is a one-time setup, and it takes under a minute. First, download or update to the latest version of the free Square Point of Sale app.
For iPhone users:
- Open the Square app and tap More in the navigation menu.
- Go to Settings › Account.
- Select Tap to Pay on iPhone and toggle it on.
- Verify your Apple ID, tap Agree & Continue, and you are ready.
For Android users:
- First, check your phone’s main settings to make sure NFC is enabled.
- Open the Square app and tap More.
- Go to Settings › Account › Tap to Pay on Android.
- Toggle Enable Tap to Pay on Android to activate it.
Once that is set, you can start processing payments.
How to Process a Payment
Taking a payment is straightforward.
- Ring up the sale: key in an amount or select items from your product library in the Square app as normal.
- Hit Charge.
- Select Tap to Pay as the payment method.
- Position the card or phone. On iPhone, the customer holds their card or wallet horizontally at the top front of your device, over the contactless symbol. On Android, they tap against the back of your device, usually near the centre or upper back.
- Wait for the beep. Hold steady until you see the authorisation circle, then a checkmark, then hear the success tone. The sale is complete.
Before your first real customer: two settings worth changing
- Turn on a device passcode (Settings › Security). It stops a customer accidentally backing out of the checkout screen while holding a card near your phone, which is the most common Tap to Pay mishap.
- Set your receipt details and tip prompts before you trade, not after. Changing tipping once customers have started seeing it creates more confusion than it is worth.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are these contactless payments secure?
Yes. Security is built into both Square’s software and your phone. Apple and Google do not store raw card numbers or PINs on the device or on their servers, and transactions are encrypted end to end. You never see the customer’s card number.
Which payment types can I accept?
Any physical credit or debit card carrying the contactless wave symbol, plus digital wallets including Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay and Cash App Pay. Chip-only cards without the wave symbol cannot be tapped.
What are the fees?
Square charges its standard in-person processing rate, currently 2.6% + 15¢ per tap, for Tap to Pay transactions. There are no hidden monthly fees and no premium for using your phone’s hardware rather than a reader. Rates are published on Square’s payments page.
Do I need to buy any extra hardware or card readers?
No, and that is the main appeal. Tap to Pay uses the NFC chip already inside your compatible smartphone. You do not need a Square Reader, a Bluetooth dongle or any external equipment.
Is there a monthly subscription fee?
No. There are no setup fees, no monthly subscription and no contract. The Square Point of Sale app is free and enabling Tap to Pay is free. You pay only the standard processing fee when you make a sale.
Is there a transaction limit for contactless payments?
For digital wallets, there is generally no limit beyond the customer’s own card limit. For physical contactless cards, higher-value transactions may require the customer to enter a PIN or sign on your screen, depending on the issuing bank’s rules.
What happens if a customer’s card will not tap?
You have two options: key the card number in manually, which is charged at the higher 3.5% + 15¢ rate, or send them a payment link. Both work, and both are slower. If this happens more than occasionally, a physical card reader will pay for itself quickly.
Can I use Tap to Pay and a card reader at the same time?
Yes. Both run on the same app and the same account, and you can switch between them mid-sale. Many market traders keep a reader on the table for chip cards and use Tap to Pay as a second checkout lane when the line builds.
Does Tap to Pay work without internet?
No. Every Tap to Pay transaction needs a live connection. Only the physical reader supports Square’s Offline Mode. If your signal is unreliable, carry a reader as well.
Tips for Smooth Transactions
- Keep your screen facing you. Android’s NFC chip is on the back of the device, so face the screen toward yourself to watch the transaction while presenting the back of the phone to the customer.
- Keep a backup handy. Tap to Pay is reliable, but mobile data glitches in crowded festival grounds. A standard Square Reader in your bag covers you — and if it will not connect when you need it, how to fix a Square Reader that is not connecting.
- Say the security line out loud. “Your card number never touches my phone” resolves the hesitation before it becomes an awkward pause. Some customers are wary of holding a card against a stranger’s device, and one sentence fixes it.
- Charge your phone, or bring a battery pack. Constant NFC use plus a screen that never sleeps will drain a phone far faster than a normal day. A dead phone with Tap to Pay is a closed till.
- Know when to stop using your phone. If you are running a fixed counter every day, a phone is doing a job it was not built for. Square Terminal vs. Square Card Reader covers the step up, and the countertop and mobile hardware range covers the middle ground.
If the App Stops Cooperating
Tap to Pay depends entirely on the Square app, so when the app misbehaves, the payments stop. The fastest recovery sequence — status page, connection, force-close, permissions — is in Square POS app not working. And if you later add a physical reader, here’s how to set up a Square Card Reader with your phone.
