A Square Reader that will not connect is almost never broken. In order of how often it is the cause: the battery is flat, your phone is holding a stale Bluetooth pairing, the app is missing a permission, or the plug-in reader is not seating properly in the port. Work through those four before you buy a replacement — and remember that a wireless Square Reader must be paired inside the Square app, never from your phone’s own Bluetooth menu.

Whether you are trying to take a single sale or working through a rush, a Square Reader that will not connect to your phone is a bad moment. The usual culprits are a low battery, an outdated app or operating system, and Bluetooth or headphone-jack interference. The good news is that these problems are nearly always fixable in a couple of minutes.
Below is the full sequence for both devices — the wireless Square Reader for contactless and chip, and the classic plug-in magstripe reader. Work top to bottom; the fixes are ordered by how often they resolve it.
How to Fix the Square Contactless and Chip Reader
If your Square Reader for contactless and chip is not connecting, the problem is almost always between the Square Point of Sale app and your phone’s Bluetooth. Try these in order.
Check the Battery on the Reader
It sounds too simple, and it is the answer more often than anything else. Press the small button on the reader. A single red light, or no light at all, means the battery is dead. Charge it for at least forty-five minutes before you conclude anything else is wrong. Green lights mean the battery is fine and you can move on.
Which cable you need depends on the generation: the first-generation reader charges over micro-USB, the second-generation over USB-C. From flat, a full charge takes about two hours, and four orange lights flashing in quick succession twice over confirms it is charging properly. If you see nothing at all on any cable, try a second cable and a different outlet before assuming the reader has failed.
Clear Old Bluetooth Connections
Phones get confused by cached pairings, and a stale entry will silently block a fresh one. Clear it:
- Open your phone’s main Settings menu, outside the Square app.
- Go to Bluetooth.
- Look for any old Square Readers under “My Devices” or “Paired Devices.”
- Tap the information icon or the gear beside it, then select Forget This Device or Unpair.
Toggle Bluetooth
Turn your phone’s Bluetooth off, wait ten seconds, and turn it back on.
While you are in there, one rule matters more than any other on this page: never pair the reader from your phone’s standard Bluetooth menu. It does not work, and it leaves behind exactly the cached entry you just cleared. The pairing has to happen inside the Square app. This is the single most common reason a perfectly healthy reader refuses to connect, and it is why we call it out in our guide on how to set up a Square Card Reader with your phone too.
Force Pair via the Square App
With the old connections cleared, establish a fresh one:
- Open the Square Point of Sale app.
- Navigate to More › Settings › Hardware › Card Readers.
- Press and hold the power button on your Square Reader for three to five seconds, until you see four blinking orange lights.
- Tap Connect a Reader on your phone screen and follow the prompts.
That sequence re-establishes the connection in the large majority of cases.
Check the distance and what is between you
Square Reader needs to be within about ten feet of the paired device, and Bluetooth is more fragile than people expect. A metal cash drawer, a crowded market stall full of phones, a thick counter, or a second Square device competing for the same reader will all cause drops that look like a hardware fault. If the connection holds at arm’s length but fails at the counter, the problem is placement, not the reader.
How to Fix the Square Magstripe Reader
If you are using the small reader that plugs into your phone’s Lightning port, USB-C port or headphone jack, the problem is nearly always a blockage or a missing app permission.
Take Off the Phone Case
Your case is protecting your phone and obstructing your reader. A thick case can stop the plug from seating fully in the port. Remove it and try again. If that fixes it, a slimmer case or a short port extender solves it permanently.
Clean Out Pocket Lint
Lint and dust compact into charging and headphone ports over months. Clear it gently with a wooden toothpick, a clean dry toothbrush, or a short blast of compressed air. Most people are surprised by how much comes out — and by how immediately the reader starts working.
Grant Microphone and Audio Permissions
Square reads the magstripe as an analogue audio signal. If the app does not have permission to use your phone’s microphone, it will ignore the plugged-in reader entirely — no error, no prompt, nothing.
- iOS: Settings › Square › toggle Microphone on.
- Android: Settings › Apps › Square › Permissions › enable Microphone, and Nearby Devices if listed.
Check Universal Settings
If the reader itself seems healthy but your phone still is not connecting, widen the search.
First, check for app updates in the App Store or Google Play. An outdated app version loses compatibility with reader firmware updates, and the symptom is exactly this.
Next, look at your power mode. Low Power Mode and Battery Saver throttle Bluetooth and suspend background activity, which destabilises reader connections. Charge the phone and turn the saver off.
Then update your phone’s operating system. Square drops support for older iOS and Android versions to maintain security compliance, and a phone two or three major versions behind will eventually stop working with current hardware.
Finally, rule out the app rather than the reader. If the Square app itself is freezing, crashing or refusing cards regardless of hardware, you are troubleshooting the wrong thing — go to Square POS app not working instead.
What If None of Those Steps Work?
If you have worked through everything above and the wireless reader still will not connect, force a hardware reset.
- Plug your Square Reader into a working charging cable and power source.
- Press and hold the power button for a solid twenty seconds.
- The lights will flash. Do not let go until they stop flashing completely.
- Release the button, let the reader reboot, then retry the pairing process in the Square app.
This clears frozen firmware and returns the reader to a clean state. It is the last software-level step; anything that survives it is a warranty conversation. Square Readers carry a one-year limited warranty, so check the purchase date before you buy a replacement.
By systematically ruling out battery, permissions and cached Bluetooth errors, you should be back to tapping, dipping and swiping in short order.
How to Stop This Happening Mid-Rush
Fixing it is one thing. Not having to fix it at 12:15 on a Saturday is better.
- Keep a spare reader charged in a drawer. A backup reader costs less than one lost lunch service. Swapping one in takes seconds.
- Turn on Offline Mode in the Square app so card payments still go through when the connection, rather than the reader, is the problem.
- Charge the night before, not the morning of. A reader that dies at 11am was low at 9am.
- Consider whether a phone-plus-reader setup is still right for you. If you are running a fixed counter, a standalone device removes both the pairing and the battery from the equation entirely — see Square Terminal vs. Square Card Reader, or the wider countertop and mobile hardware range.
- Have a no-hardware fallback. If your phone supports it, Square Tap to Pay will take contactless cards with no reader at all, which turns a dead reader into an inconvenience instead of a closed till.
FAQ
Why will my Square Reader not pair via Bluetooth?
Nearly always one of three things: a flat battery, a cached pairing on the phone that needs to be forgotten, or an attempt to pair from the phone’s Bluetooth menu instead of inside the Square app. Clear all three in that order and it almost always connects.
My reader connects and then drops. What causes that?
Usually distance, interference or power saving. Keep the reader within about ten feet of the phone, away from metal and other Bluetooth devices, and turn off Low Power Mode. A reader that drops repeatedly in one specific spot is telling you about that spot.
Can I take payments while the reader is broken?
Yes, in two ways. If your phone supports Tap to Pay you can accept contactless cards and digital wallets with no reader at all. Failing that, you can key the card in manually at the higher 3.5% + 15¢ rate, or send the customer a payment link.
Does the reader need its own Wi-Fi connection?
No. The reader has no internet connection of its own. It talks to your phone over Bluetooth, and your phone’s Wi-Fi or cellular data carries the transaction. If cards are declining rather than failing to pair, check your phone’s connection first.
How long should the battery last?
A full charge should carry a full business day of payments. If yours is dying by lunchtime, the battery has degraded and it is worth checking the warranty date rather than fighting it every day.
When is it actually broken?
If it fails the twenty-second hardware reset, fails on a second known-good cable, and will not pair with a second phone, the reader itself has failed. That is a genuinely small share of cases.
Still Stuck?
If you have tried everything and nothing works, Square’s support team can take it further — check your Square account and open a support request.
A dead reader is not a small problem. It is the difference between making a sale and watching a customer walk. Merchants who cannot afford that risk usually stop running payments off a personal phone entirely, and that is the point at which it is worth talking about a proper merchant services and hardware setup with real support behind it — Turnkey Processing supports merchants across Connecticut and New England with hardware configured before it ships and a team that answers.
Keeping your Square Reader working reliably is not just operational hygiene. It tells customers their business matters to you, and that transactions with you are safe and easy.
